Shanghai's Lin-gang Special Area held a groundbreaking ceremony for a cluster of projects at its Nan'gang Port on Jan 1.

Nan'gang, which provides transport facilities for heavy components and maritime shipping, is the only multipurpose and comprehensive public port in southeastern Shanghai. It is also Lin-gang's only international port directly connected by land to the Yangshan Special Comprehensive Bonded Zone.

Since starting operations in August 2013, Nan'gang Port has developed as a roll-on, roll-off or ro-ro vehicle handling facility, a wind power blades import and export port and a designated fruit imports port.

In the future, in terms of ro-ro, Nan'gang Port will undertake ro-ro transfers of Waigaoqiao Haitong Wharf. Plans are also for it to closely participate in the overall layout optimization of Shanghai Port and help with the Shanghai's construction of an international shipping center.

The second phase of the Lingang new town Donggang area public wharf is one of the main projects of the Nan'gang Wharf cluster projects.

At present, the first phase wharf at Nan'gang Port is said to be unable to meet the overall requirements for the ro-ro transportation of 800,000 vehicles in the immediate future and 1.2 million vehicles later on. As a result, it is deemed urgent to improve the basic functions of the wharf through the construction of the second phase to improve overall transportation capacity.

Plans are for phase two to construct nine 10,000-ton berths, with a total investment of 740 million yuan ($116 million). This work is scheduled for completion in 2024.

In addition, the Shanghai International Port Group and the Lingang Group have signed an agreement to deepen their commercial cooperation.
